How to Become an Autocrat

In his book The Revenge of Power, Moisés Naim outlines the battle plan common to all wannabe autocrats attempting to take power and destroy democratic and semi-democratic governments. He names the plan the 3 Ps (Populism, Polarization, and Post-truth).

Populism: Here the individual seeks out the aggrieved, those who have lost jobs, suffered economic setbacks, and long for a time passed. These are the people who say things like, “things were much better when…” The autocrat attempts to convince these people that he is the only one who understands and wants to help them. He builds a cult-like following by encouraging prejudices and claiming total acceptance.

Polarization: Here he tries to establish those who do not agree with him as, not just people who oppose some of his policies, but enemies. He portrays them as the elite who have historically tried to keep his followers down; evil people who must be destroyed. He tells his followers to never trust anything said by the enemy.

Post-truth: The autocrat paints the media, science, and those who disagree with him as evil liars who are unable to speak the truth. He then sets out to destroy the concept of truth. Truth becomes whatever he says it is. He may be a serial liar but he somehow convinces his, now rabid, followers that only he speaks the truth. His followers must accept and repeat his lies as truth in any political actions or be subjugated by the evil ones who oppose him.

If all this sounds familiar, it perfectly describes the Trump campaigns and presidency. Of course, those in his cult will be angered to read this. Nobody wants to admit he’s or she’s been hoodwinked.
